How Tall Should a Side Table Be Next to a Sofa?

POVISON side table aligned with sofa arm height

A side table should usually be about the same height as the sofa arm, or within a few inches of it, so drinks, lamps, remotes, and books are easy to reach. If the table is much higher or lower, daily use becomes awkward.

The most practical range depends on your sofa. Measure from the floor to the top of the sofa arm, then choose a side table close to that height. A table that is one or two inches lower is often comfortable. A table that is slightly higher can work for lamps, but it may feel intrusive beside a low modern sofa.

Also consider what you will place on it. If it will hold a reading lamp, the lampshade should sit at a comfortable height when you are seated. If it will hold drinks, the tabletop should be reachable without leaning. If the table includes drawers or shelves, make sure they open without hitting the sofa or wall.

Depth matters too. A very deep table can block the walking path or make the sofa corner feel cramped. In tight spaces, a narrow side table may be better than a low wide one.

For POVISON, browse side tables and compare height, width, storage, and finish with your sofa measurements before deciding.
