Choose the right bar stool height by measuring from the floor to the underside of your counter, then selecting a stool that leaves comfortable space between the seat and the counter. Height matching is more important than style at the beginning.
For a standard kitchen counter or island around 34 to 36 inches high, a counter stool seat around 24 to 27 inches often works. For a bar-height surface around 40 to 42 inches high, a bar stool seat around 28 to 32 inches is usually more suitable. These are general ranges, so confirm the exact dimensions of both the counter and the stool.
Aim for about 9 to 12 inches between the top of the seat and the underside of the counter. This gives most people room to sit without pressing their thighs against the counter. If the counter has a thick apron, support rail, or overhang detail, measure to the lowest obstruction rather than just the countertop surface.
Also consider who will use the stools. Children, elderly guests, and shorter users may prefer a stool with a supportive back and a reachable footrest. Swivel or adjustable models can help in some layouts, but they still need stable clearance.
