A 60-inch kitchen island usually fits two bar stools comfortably, and sometimes three narrow stools if the seats are slim and the overhang allows it. For most homes, two stools will feel better for daily use.
A common planning rule is to allow about 24 inches of width per seated person. Using that rule, a 60-inch island can hold two stools with generous elbow room and a little space between them. Three stools would give only about 20 inches per person, which can feel tight unless the stools are narrow, armless, and used mainly for quick meals.
Measure the usable seating length, not just the total island length. If the island has side panels, waterfall ends, legs, decorative posts, or cabinets that block knee space, the real seating area may be shorter than 60 inches. Also check the depth of the counter overhang. Without enough knee room, even a correctly spaced stool can feel uncomfortable.
Stool width matters. Backless or armless stools often take less space than upholstered stools with arms or wide curved backs. Swivel stools may also need extra clearance so they do not hit each other or the island.
POVISON bar stools and counter stools can be compared by seat width, overall width, back design, and height. For a 60-inch island, choose two for comfort or three only after careful measurement.
